MB ChB Durham 1942; FRCS Eng 1948; MD Durham 1957.

Carr held various house appointments and registrar positions in Newcastle, Preston and London. In 1951 Carr was awarded a travelling fellowship from the University and in 1952 gained the Moynihan Prize. In 1953 Carr was appointed senior registrar in general surgery to United Manchester Hospitals and Manchester Regional Hospital Board. Carr was appointed consultant general surgeon to Bury and Rossendale Group of Hospitals in 1958, a position he held until his retirement. Carr was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society .
