Fitzgerald held junior positions at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and held gynaecological positions at Birmingham United Hospitals, Birmingham Maternity Hospital and Birmingham and Midlands Hospital for Women before being appointed resident obstetrical surgeon St Mary's Hospital Manchester in 1947. In 1948 Fitzgerald was appointed obstetric registrar at University College Hospital London. He returned to the North West in 1950 when he was appointed consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist to the Ashton, Hyde and Glossop Hospital Group. He was later appointed consultant gynaecologist to St Mary's Hospital Manchester. Fitzgerald was also clinical lecturer and examiner for the University of Manchester. He was a fellow of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society.
