Champion was born in Australia on 31 May 1908. He first qualified in dental surgery, but later graduated in medicine at Melbourne. He then came to England where he trained in plastic surgery at Basingstoke. During the war he managed severe facial injuries in Alexandria. He was then appointed to the Emergency Medical Service in Leeds, before moving to Manchester where he became the first consultant in plastic surgery in 1948. Champion was consultant to Withington Hospital, Christie Hospital and Duchess of York Hospital for Babies. He was also honorary consultant to MRI and honorary lecturer in plastic surgery at the University of Manchester. Champion's main interest was in facial surgery. He was appointed honorary surgeon to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Bermuda and also developed a large private practice. Champion was president of the Manchester Surgical Society in 1966.
