Fryers was appointed senior research fellow in the department of social and preventive medicine at the University of Manchester in 1970. He was later promoted to reader in the department of public health and epidemiology. Fryers was consultant to WHO and UNICEF before being appointed director of public health for South Cumbria District Health Authority.
