Scope and Content

This volume contains an account of the successful defense of Kanije by Tiryaki Hasan Paşa against Archduke Ferdinand in 1010 AH (1601 CE), without the author's name. The narrative, which purports to have been taken down from the lips of one of the combatants ('bu risale-yi bir gazi erk yüzünden yazıp'), was written after the death of the hero, for whom God's mercy is invoked. It is written in the dramatic style of popular tales, and is chiefly taken up with the cunning devices imagined by Hasan Paşa to deceive the besiegers, as to the extent of his resources. It begins some time before the capture of Kanije, when Hasan Paşa, deposed from the governorship of Buda, was staying in Pécs (contemporary Hungary), and the Grand Vezir İbrahim Paşa in Belgrade, preparing to attack Osterghun (contemporary Esztergom, Hungary). Hasan Paşa joins him after routing the enemy near Baranyavár (contemporary Beli Manastir, Croatia) in 1009 AH (1599-1600 CE). The history concludes with a statement of the rewards conferred upon Hasan Paşa by Sultan Mehmet III, and with an account of the conflict which arose between Ferdinand and the Lutheran ('Luteran', the Elector Palatine) on the subject of some guns taken by the Ottomans, and of several victories gained by the latter over the imperialists and their Spanish allies. This manuscript was copied in 1178 AH (1764-65 CE).
