Scope and Content

This volume contains biographical notices of the Ottoman Sultans compiled by Osmanzade Ahmet Tayip (died 1724 CE), with a continuation by Seyit Abdusamet İsmet up to Sultan Abdülmecit (reigned 1839-1861 CE). The work is illustrated, containing 32 full-page portraits depicting 31 Sultans of the Ottoman dynasty in the following order:. f 4v : Osman I, in a red kaftan with gold edging and long flaps over a green robe. Red kuşak and high white turban in narrow folds and with a gold cap;. f 6v : Orhan, wearing a blue-edged red kaftan with long flaps over a yellow green-patterned robe. Green kuşak and a tightly wound high white turban with red cap;. f 8v : Bayezit I (Yıldırım), wearing a red kaftan with a mauve collar and edging over a gold-pattered green robe. Round white turban with a gold cap;. f 10v : Murat I, wearing a mauve kaftan with long flaps and blue-patterned trimming, over a green-patterned yellow robe. Red kuşak. Turban as above;. f 13v : Mehmet I, wearing a green kaftan with long flaps and a gold-patterned mauve edge over a gold-patterned red robe. Turban as above;. f 15v : Murat II, wearing a pink kaftan with flaps and a gold patterned blue edge over a red robe which has a black and gold design. Green kuşak and a tightly wound high turban with a gold brim and cap;. f 17v : Mehmet II (Fatih), wearing a bright blue kaftan, with flaps and an ermine lining and gold fastenings, over a green robe which has a black and gold design. Red kuşak and a white turban which has a gold band (sarık teli) across it, a pointed mauve cap, and a stiff black aigrette (sorguç) in a jeweled holder;. f 21v : Bayezit II, depicted as an elderly man with a grey beard. Wearing a green kaftan, with flaps, ermine lining and collar and gold fastenings, over a yellow robe which has a floral design in black and gold. High white (örf) turban with a flat top and a high blue cap, and a drooping aigrette in a jeweled holder;. f 23v : Selim I (Yavuz), wearing a red kaftan over his shoulders which appears to have an astrakhan lining. He is holding a gold mace and has a dagger in his gold belt. Green robe with floral design. Wearing a white (örf) turan with two upright aigrettes and a central drooping aigrette;. f 26v : Süleyman I (Kanunî), portrayed as an elderly man with grey beard and moustache. Wearing a yellow kaftan with gold fastinings and an ermine collar and lining over a green robe which has a gold design. Süleymaniye kavuğu (turban) with a drooping aigrette;. f 30v : Selim II, wearing a gold-trimmed short-sleeved green kaftan with gold fastenings and green flaps. Turban as in f 26v with the addition of a tall red cap;. f 32v : Murat III, wearing a purple kaftan with flaps and a white fur lining over a green robe with a floral design. Turban as in f 26v;. f 34v : Mehmet III, wearing a yellow kaftan with gold fastenings and an ermine lining over a green robe with a floral design. Turban as in f 26v;. f 36v : Ahmet I, wearing a green kaftan with gold fastenings and a brown fur lining over a purple robe which has a gold design. Turban as in f 26v;. f 39r : Mustafa I (Deli), who reigned for three months in 1618 and was then reinstated by the Janissaries in 1622-23. Wearing a short-sleeved green kaftan with gold fastenings and an ermine lining over a yellow robe which has a green design. Turban as in f 26v;. f 40v : Osman II, shown as a boy holding a bow and arrow and wearing a red ermine-lined jacket with short sleeves and gold fastenings over a blue blouse and pink shirt. Yellow belt and the same style of turban as in f 26v;. f 42v : Murat IV, wearing a dark green kaftan with a red lining over chain mail. Sword and vambraces. Wearing a metal cap with a red turban wound round it ending in flowing ribbons, and with metal side pieces and a very large aigrette (sorguç) in a gold holder;. f 44v : İbrahim I, with a grey beard, wearing the kâtibi kavuk style of turban with a large green cap and a wide black aigrette (sorguç) in the centre. Wearing a green kaftan, with flaps and gold fastenings and a brown fur collar and lining, over a white gold-embroidered robe;. f 46v : Mehmet IV, Wearing a green short-sleeved kaftan with flaps, gold fastenings and brown fur collar and lining. Turban as in f 26v;. f 49v : Süleyman II, with a grey beard, wearing a green kaftan with flaps, gold fastenings and an ermine lining, over a red robe. Turban as in f 26v;. f 51v : Ahmet II, drawn as a youth wearing a dark blue kaftan with flaps, gold fastenings and a brown fur collar and lining, over a green robe which has a white floral design. Turban as in f 44v;. f 53r : Mustafa II, wearing a pink short-sleeved kaftan with flaps and a brown collar and lining. His turban has a very large aigrette (sorguç) mounted in a jeweled holder;. f 55r : Ahmet III, with a youth, probably his heir, the future Mahmud I, nearby. Both dressed in silver kaftans with flaps and brown fur linings, over gold robes. The youth has one aigrette and Ahmet III has three in his turban;. f 56v : Mahmud I, wearing a silver kaftan with flaps, long sleeves and a brown fur collar and lining, over a robe with a design in squares on the chest. Jeweled belt fastener and dagger hilt. Turban as in f 55r;. f 58v : Osman III, wearing a gold kaftan with flaps and a brown fur lining, and the 'squares' design as above, similar belt and dagger hilt. Turban as in f 44v;. f 60r : Mustafa III, wearing a white kaftan with the 'squares' design as above, and a brown fur lining, over a white robe with a green design. Large white turban with a high yellow aigrette in a jeweled holder, and a red cap;. f 61v : Abdülhamit I, as an elderly man. The same 'squares' design as above, jeweled belt fastener and dagger hilt as in f 56v. White kaftan with brown fur lining. Sam turban as in f 60r, but with a green cap;. f 63v : Selim II, green kaftan with flaps, 'squares' design, and brown fur lining. Same turban as in f 60r;. f 66r : Mustafa IV, plum-coloured kaftan with flaps, 'squares' design and brown fur lining. Same turban as in f 44v with a purple cap;. f 67v : Mustafa IV (again), who is wearing a maroon kaftan with long sleeves and brown fur (sable?) lining. He is wearing a turban similar to the one in f 44v with the addition of a high yellow aigrette;. f 68v : Three quarter-length portrait of Mahmud II wearing a European hussar-type blue uniform with gold brain on the collar and cuffs, and lined with white cloth. Blue frock coat, gold belt, and green scabbard, red tarbuş, with a blue fringe and a high yellow aigrette in a jeweled holder. Black boots with gold-spurs;. f 72r : Abdülmecit I on a black horse which has three white stockings and ornate harness. Abdülmecit has a green cloak over blue trousers, gold spurs and stirrup, gold-embroidered tunic with a high collar and a red tarbuş with a royal-blue fringe and aigrette. The text contains a single unvan (f 1v). Although the name of the painter is not given, a close examination of the portraits against similar portraits identified as those of Fenerci Mehmed reveals considerable similarities. The manuscript was copied in the 19th century CE.
