Scope and Content

An Ottoman Turkish translation of the Kharīdat al-ᶜajāᵓib wa farīdat al-gharāᵓib (خريدة العجائب وفريدة الغرائب), a cosmographical work by Sirāj al-Dīn Abū Ḥafṣ ᶜUmar ibn al-Wardī (died 850 AH/1446 CE). The translator's name is Mahmud el-Hatip el-Rumî and the date of composition of the work is 970 AH (1562-63 CE). The work is dedicated to Osman Şah ibn-i İskender. This manuscript contains a coloured map of the world (ff 2v-3r) as well as a plan of Mecca on f 55v. In the plan, the Kaaba is featured at the centre and is surrounded by structures indicating various places of religious importance within its vicinity. This is further surrounded by a ring that contains the names of important places within the Muslim world (?). Folio 1v features an Ottoman-style unvan with floral motifs in blue, red and gold inks. Folio 24v contains a chapter (?) title enclosed within illumination in the shape of a Nilometer painted in red, blue, black and gold inks. The manuscript was copied in 972 AH (1564-65 CE) by Mustafa ibn-i Hüseyn at Yenibazar and is fully vocalized.
