Scope and Content

This volume contains an Ottoman Turkish translation by İsmail Müfit Efendi (died 1217 AH/1802-03 CE) of Bursalı Dede Efendi's Arabic treatise on government entitled al-Siyāsat al-sharīᶜiyah (السياسة الشرعية). The latter is mentioned in OM as a scholar of some repute who died in 1147 AH (1734-35 CE), but there is nothing about his composing a treatise by this title, although he did compose several works in Arabic. This copy has been lettered 'Siyasat-namah' since the original work from which the translation was made is referred to in the text as Siyasetname (f 2r). The text contains a single unvan. This manuscript was copied in 1204 AH (1789-90 CE).

In Brockelmann, the title al-Siyāsat al-sharīᶜiyah fī iṣlāḥ al-rāᶜī wa'l-raᶜiyah (السياسة الشرعية في اصلاح الراعي والرعية) is applied to a work on government by Ibn Taymiyah (G. II, pp. 105, 446) and to another work on the same subject by İbrahim ibn-i Bahşizade, who died in 973 AH (1565-66 CE) (S. II, 124, No. 114). There is a copy of an Ottoman Turkish translation of the work by Ibn Taymiyah in Wrocław (Richet Un. 40/2) and another copy is mentioned in Karatay I, p. 600. Unfortunately, the first lines are not quoted.
