Scope and Content

This volume contains a list of the ulema of the Ottoman Empire beginning with the Şeyh-ül-İslâm, Mekki Efendizade Mustafa Asım (died 1262 AH/1845-46 CE). The compiler includes himself in the Sadaret-i Rumeli, but does not reveal his name. The date of appointment and, when deceased, the date of death of each person is recorded. In some cases the movements from one office to another are mentioned. On the last folio is a list of various towns beginning with Ankara, giving a figure, which might be their population, for each. Although the cover bears the tuğra of Mahmud II (reigned 1808-39 CE) stamped in gold, most of the appointments are dated in the reign of his successor, Abdülmecit II (reigned 1839-61 CE). There are blank folios on ff 33-34, 44-45, 47-48, 54-55, 75-76, 81-82, 87-88, 93-94, 104-105, 114-115, 149-150, and 162-163. The text contains a single unvan.
