Scope and Content

This volume contains an Ottoman Turkish translation dedicated to the Grand Vizier İbrahim Paşa of an Arabic text by ᶜAlī (Muṣṭafá bin Aḥmad). According to the preface (f 1v) the work was translated into Ottoman Turkish, along with additional text, by Ali Bey Efendi. He relied on an original Arabic work under the title of Minhāj al-sulūk ilá adab ṣuḥbat al-mulūk. In Flügel (III, p. 312), this translation is attributed to Osmanzade Ahmet Tayyip (died 1136 AH/1723-24 CE), and the original is said to have been written in Arabic by ᶜAlī. Babinger (GO, p. 134) shows this to be an error, demonstrating that ᶜAlī used an Arabic work by Abū ᶜuthmān ᶜamr bin Jāḥiẓ entitled Minhāj al-sulūk of which Osmanzade Ahmet Tayyip prepared a summary (tahlis). The work found in the current manuscript must be identical with this and this is confirmed by the mention of Tayyip and other remarks in the verses on ff 2v-3r. The statement in Karatay (I, p. 500) tha the work was dedicated to Kandiye fatihi Damat İbrahim Paşa must therefore not be true, and so the İbrahim Paşa in the preface must be Nevşehirli İbrahim Paşa, the Vizier of Ahmet III. The work is divided into 15 fusul and this particular copy was produced in 1258 AH (1842-43 CE).
