Scope and Content

This volume contains the three Persian mesneviler of Sultan Veled İbn-i Celaleddin Rumi, whose death took place in 712 AH (1312 CE). These begin with the Ibtidānāmah (ابتدانامه) (ff 3v-107v), a spritiual biography of the Mevlana Rumi. It is interspersed with verses in Ottoman Turkish on ff 104v-105r. Other Ottoman Turkish verses occur (ff 196r-197v) in the Rabābnāmah (ربابنامه), a mystical poem found on ff 108v-201v. The final mesnevi of the three, the Intihānāmah (انتهانامه) (ff 202v-289r) contains no Ottoman Turkish text. Each of the three mesneviler has a short prose preface. This manuscript was copied in 965 AH (1557-58 CE). Given the presence of numerous examples of idiosyncratic Old Anatolian Turkish orthography, it is likely that this copy was based on an earlier text.
