Scope and Content

This volume contains the collected poetry of Galip. Mehmet Esat, son of Mustafa Reşit Efendi, commonly known as Galip Dede, was Şeyh of the Mevlevi tarikat in Galata. He was the most eminent poet of his time and was highly esteemed by Sultan Selim III. He was born in 1171 AH (1757-58 CE) and died, according to Nuri, on 26 Recep 1213 (3 January 1799 CE). This Divan has chronograms that come down to 1213 AH (1798-99 CE). The contents of the Divan are as follows: kasideler, many of which are in praise of Sultan Selim III (ff 1v-19v); chronograms relating mostly to buildings erected by the same Sultan (ff 20r-33v); terciibentler (ff 34r-49r); tahmisat (ff 49v-59v); şarkıyat (ff 60r-63v); mesneviler with a few short pieces in prose (ff 64r-75r); gazeller in alphabetical order (ff 75v-151r); a second series of chronograms, consisting mostly of obituary dates (ff 151v-158r); mukattaat (ff 158v-162v); rubaiyat (ff 163r-169v); and single lines, or ebyat-i müferrike (ff 170r-174v). The text contains two unvans. At the end of the text is written the date of transcription, 1172 AH (1758-59 CE), which is evidently a mistake for 1272 AH (1854-55 CE).
