Scope and Content

A berat or charter awarding the Nişan-ı Osmaniye 2nd Class to General Goldsmith, a British official in Egypt. The berat was granted by Sultan Abdülhamit II and is dated 24 Cemazielahir 1300 AH (2 May 1883 CE). The entire berat is composed in Divani script. It contains a large tughra of Sultan Abdülhamit II in gold, under which is found a stylized boat (?) formed of calligraphy. A small single leaf is also formed of calligraphy in gold-leaf in the bottom left-hand corner of the berat. A final gold-leaf illumination in the form of an upside-down comma is located at the top of the manuscript.
