Scope and Content

This volume contains the poetical oeuvre of Afif Efendi. This poet cannot be identified with any of the mahlaslar occurring in the tezkireler on hand, but there is no doubt from various indications in the poems that he was a müderris by profession. The Divan is divided into two sections, the first of which (ff 1v-19v) consists of longer poems beginning with a na't. This is followed by chronograms which give dates ranging between 1175 AH (1761-62 CE) and 1208 AH (1793-94 CE). The second section contains gazeller (ff 20v-29v), müfredat (ff 29v-30v), and mukattaat (ff 30v-31r). At the end of the manuscript are a few letters (ff 32v-36v): (1) from Mazrup Ahmet Efendi to the Kahvecibaşı Rüstem Ağa; (2) from various müderrisler to the Şeyh-ül-İslam; (3) from the Şeyh-ül-İslam; and finally (4) a letter in Arabic without any caption dated 1206 AH (1791-92 CE). The text contains two unvans. The manuscript was likely copied in the early 19th century CE.
