Scope and Content

This volume contains an Arabic dictionary explained in Ottoman Turkish. The author, whose name does not appear, says in a short preamble that the sacred sciences and divine laws having come down to us in Arabic, learning and teaching that language is an act of piety and a duty of paramount importance. On that ground, he excerpted from the Ṣiḥāḥ (صحاح) of Ismāᶜīl ibn Ḥammād al-Jawharī and the Mukhtār-i Ṣiḥāḥ (مختار صحاح) of Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr Rāzī, as well as words from various Qur'anic commentaries and the Aḥādīth, and explained the whole in Ottoman Turkish in order to render it useful. The work is divided into 28 ebvap according to the final radicals, and each bab is subdivided into 28 fusul according to the intial letters. It appears to be distinct from a similar work entitled Tercüman or Tercümanü'l-luğat, by Pir Mehmet İbn-i Yusuf el-Ankaravi, which is described as being based on the Ṣiḥāḥ and the Mughrib, and as consisting of three volumes. This manuscript was copied in one of the eight medreseler (İstanbul) in Şeval 973 AH (April-May 1566 CE).
