Tibr el-mesbuk - تبر المسبوك

This volume contains an Ottoman Turkish translation of an Arabic ethical work entitledAl-tibr al-masbūk fī mā yaḥtajūna ilayhi al-mulūk (التبر المسبوك في ما يحتجون اليه الملوك). The translator, Abdullah Kudsi, states that the author of the original work was al-Fāḍil bin ᶜabdullāh Muḥammad ibnu'l-Muqaffaᶜ (f 1v), but there is no work of this title associated with ibnu'l-Muqaffaᶜ. The view is taken by Rossi (p. 271) that the work is possibly the Tibr al-masbūk fī naṣīḥat al-mulūk (تبر المسبوك في نصيحت الملوك) of al-Ghazzālī that was originally written in Persian and then translated into Arabic. There is, however, a difference between the text and contents of both these works. A note in German at the back of the volume states that the work is a translation of Muṣannifak, but there is no recorded work of the latter with this title. . The work by ibnu'l-Muqaffaᶜ is divided into 28 fusul of which only 23 are indicated in this copy, the remainder being without rubrication. It contains moral and political counsels, which are illustrated by anecdotes, and is dedicated to Sultan Ahmet I. . A Bab-i haset (ff 51r-55r) has been added after the colophon, presumably as an afterthought. . The work is probably a compilation from Arabic works on the same subject, but we have no means of proving this. . This manuscript was copied by Hasseki Oflazzade Mustafa Rakım, Mir-i Karahısari in Ağrıboz Livası in 1240 AH (1824-25 CE). .
