Scope and Content

This volume contains the poetical works of Basri, a Bektaşi poet who cannot be identified with any certainty. A poet known as Basri Baba (born 1290 AH/1873 CE) appears in Bektaşi Şairleri (p. 26), but the extracts quoted are all in parmak hisabı, whereas the poet whose work is represented in this manuscript uses Divan metres and forms throughout. The manuscript, moreover, would appear to predate the time of Basri Baba. A more likely identification is with Hasan-i Basri in Fatin (p. 27), who was born in 1246 AH (1830-31 CE), and was still young when Fatin was writing. Here nothing is mentioned about the poet's Bektaşi connections, and the passage quoted cannot be found in the current manuscript, which does not contain any gazeller in ng. It is possible, however, that Basri joined the Bektaşi order later in his life. The manuscript is a rough draft with folios in another hand and on a different paper inserted between ff 3-4, 18-20 (blank), and 21-24 (the latter of which are foliated as 22-23). It has been bound in the wrong order and the beginning is on f 5v, opening with a münacat. The first gazel is to be found on f 23v. There are some short kasideler after f 11r. The blank pages references above appear to have been intended for poems that were never written or copied. The manuscript was copied in the latter half of the 19th century CE.
