Scope and Content

This volume contains a set of questions and answers for the oral examination for promotion from Nefer (Private) to Onbaşı (Corporal) in the Ottoman army. The questions probe the skills and knowledge of the candidate, and asks how they would respond to numerous scenarios. No author's name is given. By 1259 AH/1843 CE, when this manuscript was produced, some military texts were being published in printed form, but no printed edition of the present work has been traced. The text is further distinguished by its fine nesih, its finely illuminated unvan sayfası, and its gilded margins and text markers. Begins:. Sual: kaç seneden beri nizama hizmet ediyorsun? Cevap: İki seneden beri. Sual: Okumak bilir misin? Cevap: Bilirim, yahut bilmem. Sual: Yazı yazmak bilir misin? Cevap: Bilirim, yahut bilmem. Ends:. Sual: Koğuşta bir nefer hastalanırsa baş çavuş ne hareket eder? Cevap: Hastanın ismini ve koğuşunu pusla edip cerrah-başıya verilmek üzere nizam karakoluna gönderir. f 1v contains an excellent illuminated headpiece, in late rococo style but incorporating a stylized medieval European helmet as well as arabesque scrolls, flower motifs and ribbons tied in bows. Both ff 1v and 2r contain floral sprays in the margins and circular gilded text markers, and have text frames in gold, green, and red. The colophon is on f 21r, and states that the work was copied by Seyyid Hafız Hüsni el-Edirnevi, pupil of Hafız Mustafa el-Arabi, in 1259 AH/1843 CE.
