Poston was a medical graduate of Queens University Belfast but shortly afterwards settled in Failsworth. He worked as an anaesthetist at MRI and Ancoats and was surgeon to Oldham Royal Infirmary from 1927 until 1938. Poston was a member of Manchester Medical Society and PSM, and was married to Margaret Poston. He died on 16 March 1951, aged 54.
