Nield was born in Manchester where his father was principal of Dalton Hall, a hall of residence associated with Owens College. He studied medicine at Owens, taking his MB ChB in 1896. He spent most of his professional career in Bristol where he was a physician at Bristol General Hospital. He was an examiner for the Conjoint Board and for the Universities of Bristol and Birmingham. Nield was president of the Bristol and Bath branch of the BMA in 1923/4.
