McKeown trained at Middlesex Hospital, London. He spent time in Oxford as a research psychiatrist to the University and as senior registrar to the health authority. McKeown was consultant psychiatrist to Cheadle Royal Hospital before being appointed medical director to Altrincham Priory Hospital.
