Miles was born in Sheffield on 14 August 1911 and gained his medical education at Sheffield University. After qualifying, Miles was commissioned into the Royal Navy, serving in China and the Mediterranean. From 1952 to 1955 he was engaged in research, culminating in his MD in 1955. He did further research at the Royal Naval Physiological Laboratory and in 1959 was appointed medical officer in charge of the Royal Naval Medical School, director of naval medical research and consultant in physiology. From 1966 to 1969 Miles was medical officer in charge of the Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth. He was then appointed dean of postgraduate medical studies at the University of Manchester. Miles retired from this position in the late 1970s. He was a member of MMS, a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine. Miles was awarded the Gilbert Blane Gold Medal by the Royal College of Surgeon in 1957, the British Medical Association Gold Medal in 1963, the World Medical Association Grand Prix in 1964 and the Herbert Lott Prize by the Ministry of Overseas Development in 1966.
