Helme was the brother of Edgar and Milner Helme. He graduated from Edinburgh University in 1885 and later received a MD from the University of Strasbourg in 1889. His early research interests were in gynaecology, but these were interrupted by a short spell as a general practitioner in Fallowfield, Manchester. He then moved to become a resident obstetric surgeon at St Mary's Hospitals and was later a honorary surgeon at the Manchester Northern Hospital for Women and Children. He enjoyed a considerable reputation as a gynaecologist and published a number of papers. Helme was an active medical politician, serving as a member of the Central Council of the BMA and as president and honorary secretary of the Lancashire and Cheshire branch of the BMA. During the First World War, he was chairman of the Medical War Committee for Manchester and Salford. He was also active in the agitation against the National Insurance Bill in 1911.
