Martin, of Irlam, studied medicine at the University of Manchester. He served in the RAMC and was assistant medical officer at Stepping Hill Hospital Stockport before being appointed surgical registrar to Withington Hospital Manchester. Martin later settled as a general practitioner in Stoke-on-Trent.
