Sankar Panikkar was the son of Mathoor Panikkar, and studied medicine at the University of Manchester. He was a consultant NET surgeon at Blackburn group of Hospitals from 1957-1986. He was president of the North of England Otolaryngological Society in 1980; he was also active in the ENT Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.
