Macartney received his medical education in Belfast and held junior appointments at hospitals in Belfast. He came to Manchester before serving as a major and later lieutenant colonel in the RAMC during the war. Macartney was medical superintendent and later consultant physician of Crumpsall Hospital Manchester and consultant physician to Ancoats Hospital Manchester. Macartney retired in 1971 and died on 24 November 1989.
