Hunter was educated at Derby and Nottingham University College and received his medical educated at Edinburgh. During his studies, Hunter took a commission in the Royal Field Artillery and served for four years, returning to his medical studies in 1918. Hunter then held junior appointments at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Bellahouston Hospital, Glasgow, and the Simpson Maternity Hospital, Edinburgh. He was then appointed to Edinburgh University as assistant and awarded a scholarship. Hunter came to Manchester in 1923 when he was appointed RSO to St Mary's Hospital, later promoted to resident obstetric surgeon and assistant surgical officer. Trained a large number of nurses and greatly enjoyed his work as an obstetrician. Hunter was later honorary gynaecological surgeon to Manchester Northern Hospital, and honorary surgeon to St Mary's Hospitals. Hunter was a member of the North of England Gynaecological and Obstetrical Society, Manchester Pathological Society and the Edinburgh Obstetrical Society. Hunter died on 13 October 1959.
