Montgomery was educated at Oxford University and Owens College Manchester. He received the conjoint diploma in 1891. He worked in Manchester at the Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury, Crumpsall Infirmary, and Ancoats Hospital, and was assistant surgeon at MRI from 1900-1908, when he was forced to resign his post due to TB. He is believed to have died in 1911.
