Kershaw received his medical education at the University of Manchester and was demonstrator in morbid anatomy there. After qualifying, Kershaw held junior positions at MRI and Cheadle Royal Hospital and was surgeon captain in the RNR before being appointed lecturer in medical parasitology at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in 1948. In 1958 he was promoted to Walter Myers and Everett Dutton professor of parasitology and entomology, a position he held until 1966. Kershaw was later appointed professor of biology at the University of Salford, and was made emeritus professor on his retirement. Kershaw was also advisor to Manchester Area Health Authority on tropical medicine and parasitology, and honorary lecturer on medical parasitology in the department of bacteriology and virology at the University of Manchester. Kershaw was a member of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and a fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Kershaw married Mary Alexa Clayton Cowell, also a doctor. Kershaw died in [May] 1998.
