Jones gained his medical qualifications from Liverpool University in 1959, gaining his MD in 1972. In 1965 Jones gained his diploma in pathology, and was lecturer in pathology in Uganda before coming to Manchester. Jones was appointed senior lecturer in pathology at the University of Manchester in 1973, and in 1976 became honorary consulting histopathologist at Hope Hospital. Jones became a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in 1981.
