McLean qualified at the Royal University of Ireland in 1897 after studying at Queen's College Belfast. He practiced in north Manchester for over 40 years, building up a very large practice. McLean was an opponent of state medicine. He was a member of MMS. McLean died on 3 June 1943 aged 72.
