Hamilton was educated at Belfast and Vienna, and qualified in 1887. He was a member of the committee of the Manchester and Salford Sanitary Association, a fellow of the British Institute of Public Health. His posts included surgeon to the no.8 Section of the Manchester Ship Canal, and medical officer for the Barton Union (near Manchester).
