Kisely gained his medical qualifications in Bristol in 1980, and held hospital appointments in Bristol, New Zealand and Australia. Kisely came to Manchester in 1988 as registrar in psychiatry to the North West Region and from 1990 was lecturer in psychiatry and later in public health medicine and honorary senior registrar at the University of Manchester.
