Kershaw was house surgeon at MRI and dental surgeon in Rochdale before being appointed lecturer in dental pathology at the University of Manchester, a position he retired from in 1960 after thirty-nine years service. Kershaw was also honorary pathologist at Manchester Dental Hospital and dental surgeon to Lancashire County Council.
