Platt studied medicine at Owens College, and qualified din 1888. He took the BS of London University in 1891 and the MS in 1894, followed by the MD in 1900. He held house and resident appointments at MRI before being appointed assistant surgeon in 1900 and honorary surgeon in 1905. He also lectured in surgery at the University of Manchester. Platt was chairman of the Medical board of MRI, and was a former secretary of the Manchester Medical Society.
