Peel studied chemistry at the University of Manchester, and later worked in teaching. He later studied medicine at Manchester and graduated in 1946. He then worked in the clinical laboratory at MRI, and later worked at Stockport Infirmary and Stepping Hill Hospital as a pathologist.
