James O'Grady studied medicine at the University of Manchester and received the licentiate of the Apothecaries Hall Dublin in 1916. He worked as an anaesthetist at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Park Hospital, St John's Hospital. He was also a former officer commanding at the 12th (2nd Western) General Hospital. He was a member of Manchester Medical Society and a deputy lieutenant of Lancashire.
