Masfen was resident surgeon to Staffordshire General Infirmary before being appointed surgeon to St Mary's Hospital Manchester, a position he held from 1854 to 1856. He was also surgeon to Chorlton-on-Medlock Dispensary, Manchester. Masfen was a fellow of the Royal Medical Chirurgical Society.
