Pemberton graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1962 and took the DA in 1968. He held various house and registrar posts in anaesthetics in Manchester hospitals before being appointed as consultant anaesthetist at Stockport and Buxton AHA in 1974. He was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society.
