Abraham Leach was born in Ellenrod near Rochdale, probably in the early nineteenth century. Leach was an apprentice to Dr Ogden of Rochdale from 1824 to 1829 and studied at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals. He later practised in Waterhead, near Oldham and was district medical officer for Oldham Union. He was alive in 1890. His son, also named Abraham Leach (see below), also practised in Oldham.
