Manning studied at St Andrews and Liverpool Universities, qualifying in 1937 and gaining his FRCPath in 1964. Manning was assistant pathologist at Ancoats Hospital Manchester and later senior pathologist at Bolton. Manning was Home Office forensic pathologist for numerous murder cases in Lancashire and was regarded as a formidable expert witness. Manning was president of the Section of Pathology of MMS and a founder fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. He died on 4 October 1972 at the age of 63.
