Padmanabhan was born in Nagpur, India, and received his medical degree from the University of Nagpur in 1956. He held anaesthetist posts in the USA before coming to Britain in 1962. In 1969 he was appointed consultant anaesthetist at the Rochdale Group of Hospitals. He was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society.
