Kirkby was an important Manchester pharmacist. He was lecturer in pharmacology at the University of Manchester and played an important role in the development of pharmaceutical education, helping to institute the degree of BSc in pharmacy at the University. He was awarded an honorary MSc by the University of Manchester in 1908. Kirkby gave evidence before the Royal Commission set up after the beer-poisoning epidemic of 1900. He was twice president of the Manchester Pharmaceutical Association and in 1919 was president of the British Pharmaceutical Conference. Kirkby lived in Heaton Moor and was an active Methodist. He died in Bristol aged 82.
