Manson was born in Calcutta, India, on 27 March 1931. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. Manson held resident appointments at MRI and Bury and Rossendale before serving in the RAF from 1958 to 1961. In 1961 Manson was appointed registrar to MRI and from 1964 to 1966 was registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology to South Manchester Hospitals. He was senior registrar to United Liverpool Hospitals before being appointed consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist to Preston and Chorley Hospitals. Manson was a member of MMS and of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society.
