Matthews, the son of Samuel Matthews (see above), was born in Manchester on 4 July 1831. Matthews studied medicine at Manchester before settling in general practice in Longsight, where he was also medical officer and public vaccinator. Matthews was a member of MMS and was surgeon to the Clerks' and Warehousemen's Provident Society. Harry Ernest Hamerton Matthews, a surgeon in Longsight, was probably his son (see above).
