Hamilton was born in Ireland and studied at Queen's University, Belfast, a and Edinburgh University and graduated in 1910. He worked in general practice at Old Trafford, Manchester. He served in the First World War in the RAMC and received the MC. Hamilton's area of interest was ENT and later worked at a number of Manchester hospitals including Ancoats, Monsall, Manchester Ear and was a consultant surgeon at the Manchester Hospital for Diseases of the Throat and Chest, where he worked until retiring in 1961. Hamilton played an important role in developing the surgical treatment of diseases of the nose and chest at the Hospital.
