Kitching was born on 26 March 1911 and attended Harrogate Grammar School and Leeds University, where he also held house positions. In 1935 Kitching was appointed assistant medical officer at Cefn Coed Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in Swansea, and in 1937 was promoted to deputy medical superintendent. In 1939 Kitching was appointed psychiatrist to the medical neurological department at MRI, being the first psychiatric appointment at MRI. Kitching served in the RAF medical branch as a neuropsychiatrist. After the war, the University of Manchester created a department of psychiatry, and Kitching became a part-time lecturer. At the same time he gained an appointment at Withington Hospital Manchester where he was allocated some beds (all the cases at MRI had been out-patients). Kitching was also advisor in psychiatry to Manchester Corporation and took responsibility for a new day care centre and hostel for chronic psychiatric patients. Kitching died on 4 October 1968 aged 57.
