Hambleton studied medicine at Oxford University and Guy's Hospital London. He was a consultant paediatrician at Trafford AHA from 1975-1983, and was later a consultant paediatrician at Hope Hospital and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. He was a honorary lecturer in child health at the University of Manchester, and published A manual of paediatrics (1988).
