Known as 'Old Doctor Mellor', Mellor was practicing as a druggist in Withy Grove, Manchester, probably in the early nineteenth century. He had the 'privilege' of measuring and examining the new recruits to the army during the Napoleonic Wars, receiving a fee for each man.
