Harrison gained his medical qualifications at Leeds and Guys, becoming MRCS in 1845 and LSA in 1858. He was consultant surgeon at Ardwick and Ancoats Dispensary, and lecturer on forensic medicine and later medical jurisprudence at the Royal Manchester School of Medicine. Harrison died on 28 March 1877 as a result of overdose of nitrous oxide at a dentist's.
